Seal drag and MTB suspension service

Seal drag and MTB suspension service

There is a lot happening on the inside of your mountain bikes suspension. To ensure an optimal ride regularly servicing your mountain bike suspension is very important. In the video below Ryan talks about “seal drag” as well as the importance of regular maintenance.

What is “seal drag”?

Seal drag occurs when internal parts of your mountain bikes suspension begin to break down or lose lubrication. Having the proper tolerances on these internal parts as well as proper amounts of lubrication and fluids is very important to overall performance.

Example:

In the video you can see Ryan using a tool to gauge the bushings in the Fox Fork. Doing this ensures that the bushing provides the correct amount of friction on the fork stanchion. If this bushing is too tight, the fork will lose some small bump compliance. If this is too loose, the fork can have “play” in it and feel like garbage.

It is very important to regularly service your mountain bikes suspension. Even if you don’t ride 7 days a week, Fluid will break down over time and grease will dry up which hinders suspension performance. In addition, regular suspension service gives us the opportunity to make sure everything thing else is working as it should inside your MTB’s suspension.
