MTB coil spring dyno test
MTB coil spring dyno test
Spring rate is how you pick the correct spring for rider weight. Having a spring that “rates” as close as possible to the listed spring rate is very important to ensure proper tuning of your mountain bike suspension. In the video below Ryan dynos 5 springs from different coil manufacturers:
Fox
Push industries
Ohlins
Cane Creek
SAR (super alloy racing)
Preload
Preload is added by putting the spring under tension. Preload can help fine tune a coil to your body weight. It can also be used to make up for a spring being under the listed spring rate. Ideally you run as little preload as possible. This ensures you will get the best small bump compliance from your coil suspension. As well as making sure that the spring can support large hits too.
Coil spring rate
If coil spring doesn’t dyno at the listed spring rate, that doesn’t make it a bad spring. but that can make it a bad fit for you on your bike. Especially if you are in the bottom or top section of recommended spring rate. Having the ability to dyno a spring to get the actual rate will always help in optimal suspension tuning.
